Common Reasons Why Kodi Stops Working

As we all know, Kodi is one of the most portable media center software packages. It is compatible with many devices, such as Firestick Lite, Firestick Max, Roku, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield Pro, etc.

While Kodi is platform-independent, each device has its system resources, user profile files, and subroutines. Kodi has many options. Due to that, it becomes hard to fix Kodi’s problems instantly.

For example, while trying to repair Kodi on your Firestick, you may find bugs that do not exist on the Android version of the software.

As a result, though the methods below should work in most cases, we cannot promise that they will fix the real cause of the problem on all Kodi devices.

Most of the time, malicious Kodi add-ons from unknown sources are why Kodi does not work correctly. In that case, you should delete the Kodi add-on that might be causing the problem.

Because we do not know what a malicious add-on is doing internally, suppose a Kodi add-on takes more resources on your device, viz. Firestick, Roku, etc., suddenly, Kodi will stop working.

In addition, you can try updating the Kodi; if it fixes the problem. Sometimes, duplicate repository compatibility might cause Kodi problems. Ensure you add the correct repository on Kodi, compatible with your device.

Additionally, it would help if you looked for the right modules too. Here are the most common reasons why Kodi stops working suddenly.

Accessing Unavailable Content

Not everything you look for on Kodi on the public internet is available. Kodi, like Google, searches the internet for video and audio you want to watch.

So it is half-truth and half-lie whenever you see a link, a banner, or anything else that suggests your most-wanted film is now accessible for watching.

It’s all right if the add-on content you want to play is available. If not, then you are free to move on. But, probably, it is not even over the internet. So, make sure the repository link is working.

Restricted Content

The second reason maybe you are trying to access the restricted content. Governments and ISPs in many countries limit watching certain kinds of content.

Whether you like it or not, internet service providers worldwide decide what information you may watch. Because ISPs have to impose restrictions due to internet censorship in their country.

On the other hand, Blocked content means adult movies or images that are unsuited and violate the country’s regulations.

You can use a VPN for Kodi to eliminate internet censorship if you are in another country.

Unsupported Addons

In the Kodi world, many add-ons stop working after some time. In that case, either you can update the repository link or choose another popular Kodi add-on.

Users have a tough time reinstalling updates once add-ons stop working. Indeed, you should follow the creators of add-ons on social media to get the latest updates about the Kodi add-on.

Kodi Version Not Updated

Users who do not keep up with the developers’ updates are more likely to have an outdated add-on. You should manually update Kodi add-ons if you have not enabled the auto-update option.

When you update the Kodi app, developers enable support for most current operating systems, dependencies, and backend drivers aside from new features.

So, the simplest way to solve Kodi not working problem is to accept Kodi software upgrades as soon as updates are available.

Unable to Play Kodi Streams

When you cannot play videos on Kodi, ensure your internet connection and the Kodi add-on repository link is active. You cannot watch videos uploaded online if you do not have access to the internet.

Another Kodi problem reason can be the add-on may be no longer functional. Sadly, development teams come and frequently go due to legal threats.

As a result, you will not be able to install new additions from the repo in question in certain situations, and any ones you currently have may become unstable or stop working.

When you cannot play video streams on Kodi, you may be trying to access blocked services from outside the country. For example, you cannot access the iPlayer WWW extension in a country other than the UK. However, as discussed earlier, you can use a good Kodi VPN to access geo-restricted content.

Kodi Crash and Reboot Reasons

Sometimes, all of a sudden, Kodi crashes and reboots. The reason can be a newly installed add-on or build. Find the build or add-on you installed recently and delete the add-on from Kodi using the proper method.

Another way to fix the Kodi crash problem is to restart your device. Fire TV Stick, Roku, FireTV Cube, PC, Android, iPhone, or whatever you use. However, it may be natural sometimes when installing any add-on or build.

Often, we get an error or Kodi “URL Resolver Failed to Install a Dependency“. To fix this error, make sure your internet connectivity is up. Then look for any broken Kodi repository links. In other words, your Kodi repositories should be working fine.

After that, go to “System Settings” and click on “Add-ons”-> “Updates”. And choose “Install updates automatically”. If you fail to fix the Kodi error, uninstall and install Kodi on Firestick or the device you are using.

Search Option Not Working

On the Kodi matrix, the add-on search option does not work. That means a particular add-on does not work for the Kodi matrix, so the solution is you should uninstall that add-on and install the Kodi matrix builds on Kodi 19.

We all know that Kodi 19 uses an upgraded version of Python, Python-3. Hence, many Kodi add-ons with the Python-2 version stopped working on Kodi 19.

So, you can wait while the add-on developers update their code to Python-3 to work the add-on perfectly with Kodi.

Kodi Black or Blank Screen Problem

Sometimes a Kodi black screen problem is normal because Kodi may take some time to start depending on the configuration of your device. However, there may be another reason, too, such as when you upgrade Kodi to a higher version, you may get a black screen.

The second Kodi black screen is because you may get a black screen when you switch Kodi skin. Also, you can remove the add-on DB file to free some resources. Do not worry; removing the DB file will leave your add-ons intact.

Depending on your operating system, you can find DB files at the following locations:

  • Windows:- Go to Run and type %APPDATA%\kodi\userdata\Database
  • Linux:- ~/.kodi/userdata/Database
  • Android:- Android/data/orgkodi/files/.kodi/userdata/Database
  • Mac:- /Users/[YOURUSERNAME]/Library/Application/Support/Kodi/userdata/Database
  • iOS:- /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/Kodi/userdata/Database

Another solution to fix the Kodi blank or black screen problem is to clear the Kodi cache on Firetvstick. Then restart the Kodi after some time.

Unable to Install Kodi Add-ons

Many a time, a Kodi add-on installation fails. So, the probable reason is that your Kodi version does not support the add-on you are trying to install. What you can do is switch to the previous version of Kodi.

However, I strongly advise updating the add-ons periodically because older add-ons may have some vulnerabilities, compromising your device by an attacker. Moreover, you can choose another add-on from the top Kodi add-on list and install it on Kodi.

Most importantly, you should update Kodi to the latest version to stay protected from hackers and third parties.

Another critical reason you cannot install the Kodi add-on is that you may not have dependencies installed. So, in that case, you should allow the installation of dependencies while installing the Kodi add-on.

Sometimes, add-on compatibility with the Kodi version causes failure of add-on installation.

One or More Items Failed to Play

The failed-to-play media error occurs on Kodi due to a missing raw maintenance Kodi addon, a corrupt cache file, or the device not supporting the current Kodi version.
